The ReThink: Why Housing Matters initiative supports public housing authorities across the US in their efforts to join us in battling the negative perceptions of public housing. We invite you to view the video stories linked below that were inspired by ReThink, and encourage you to learn more about public housing.

A Look Back at 2014

In 2014, the city of Chicago’s public housing agencies had many accomplishments in terms of development, residents, and moving toward the future. Throughout the year, residents, employees, and innovative programming with business partners created an environment of education, growth, and progression within the housing agency.

The Connect Empowers Youth with College Knowledge

The Connect, an annual youth conference for high school juniors and seniors, provides an educational and preparatory direction for youth to create successful futures. The participants attended workshops to help them with the college application process, dealing with diversity on campus, staying out of debt, and choosing the right major.

Seniors Celebrate the Holidays at the 2014 Senior Luncheon

Each year, a holiday luncheon at Navy Pier is held for local seniors to celebrate the holiday season. The luncheon is held to build an inclusive community and to give the senior residents a place to enjoy their neighbors company. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CEO Michael R. Merchant, comedian George Willborn, 900 seniors, and the Gentlemen of Leisure Band were in attendance.

Meet Myleka

Myleka is a college student, an assistant basketball coach, and a current resident of Housing Authority of the City of High Point, who refuses to let a serious car accident stop her from chasing her dreams.

“Just because you’re living in public housing doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything with your life.”

Meet BJ

Sheriff BJ Barnes is a former public housing resident who saw public housing as an opportunity to live a normal life.

“I can be whatever I want to be, anybody can, public housing or not, it doesn’t make any difference.”

Meet Angela

Angela McGill is the CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of High Point. She is also a former public housing resident. Angela knows that the families she serves are not helpless; they are simply looking for a way out of their difficult situation.

“Our families are like any other family. They work, they pay taxes, they have dreams, they have goals, they have ambitions. They don’t want a handout, they want a way out. They just want opportunity.”
